RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team got hot from the perimeter at just the right time Friday night as the Hardrockers pulled off a glorious comeback to defeat the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelines, 80-71, in overtime during the season opener at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.
SD Mines trailed by 13 points midway through the second half, but slowly chipped away at the visitors' advantage. After
Jake Heath cashed in on a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining in the game, TAMK was holding onto a one-point edge, 57-56.
The Hardrockers quickly fouled to send the Hogs to the line where Alex Mills hit the front end of two free throws. SD Mines then knotted the game when
Allec Williams drove the lane and delivered on a buzzer-beating layup.
The Hardrockers took that momentum into overtime, hit four of five attempts from behind the arch and gain the upper hand. SD Mines outscored TAMK, 22-13, and earned a convincing first win of the season.
The Hardrockers made good on 22-48 shots from the field to shoot 45.8 percent in the game. They recorded seven three's on the night and was 29-39 from the free throw line.
The Hogs converted 24-67 attempts on the night to shoot 35.8 percent from the field and were 9-27 from three-point range. They made good on 14-23 from the foul line.
Heath led the Hardrockers with 22 points (four three-pointers), two steals and two assists,
Allec Williams contributed with 19 points, three assists, five rebounds, two steals and one block.
Logan Elers and
Troy Brady both tacked on nine markers and
Mitchell Sueker led the team with seven rebounds.
