Hardrockers Head To Colorado To Close Out Season

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines Men's Soccer team will hit the road for their final two games of the season  taking on the No. 5 ranked Colorado School of Mines (14-1-1) tonight in Golden, Colorado followed by a matchup with UCCS on Saturday in the final challenge of the season.

The Orediggers have gotten a result in their last five matches, including a 1-0 win over Westminster College, a 5-0 win over Colorado Christian, an overtime 2-1 win over MSU Denver, a 1-1 tie against Colorado Mesa, and most recently a 3-1 victory against Fort Lewis College.

Colorado School of Mines hasn't lost a game since Sept. 2 when they fell, 4-2, to St. Mary's. Colorado Mines is a well-rounded team led by senior forward Johns Haist. He has scored 16 goals and recorded 5 assists for 37 total points this season and ranks fifth in the nation for goals scored.

On Saturday, the Hardrockers take the field in their final game of the 2018 season against University of Colorado Colorado Springs (8-4-3). The Mountain Lions are fifth in the RMAC Standings.

UCCS has not been beat in their last five games, including a 2-1 overtime win against Fort Lewis, a 1-1 tie against CSU Pueblo, a 1-0 win against Adams State, a 6-0 win against Colorado Christian and a 2-0 win against MSU Denver. The Mountain Lions are led by Junior Midfielder Alex VonHolle, who has 10 goals and 7 assists for 27 points this season.

Last weekend the Hardrockers played their last two home games of the year. In Friday's matchup, SD Mines held their Senior Night in front of the biggest crowd of the year at the Dakota Soccer Complex.

Although a very special night for the team and the seniors, Fort Lewis proved to be too much for the Hardrockers. In the first half, Fort Lewis was able to hit the net twice. After halftime, the Hardrockers came out energized and pulled the score to within a goal after senior goalkeeper Kyle Daledovich was able to punt a ball from his own goal box, and beat the opposing goalkeeper on the other end of the field. This is the first goal scored by a goalkeeper in Hardrocker soccer history. As the clock ran down, Fort Lewis was able to keep their one- goal lead, and the game ended 2-1.

On Sunday, the Hardrockers took the field against No. 18 Colorado Mesa. Both teams started strong and fast paced. Colorado was able to get the first goal in the 20th minute off of a penalty kick. But the Hardrockers responded well and were able to get the goal back in the 33rd minute as junior forward Justin Barkow, the RMAC Academic Player Of The Year,  was able to get on the end of a long ball from freshman midfielder Brennan Lamoreaux and flick in over the opposing goalkeeper.

In the second half, Colorado Mesa came out flying and quickly scored their second goal of the game. The Hardrockers tried their best to pull the game back to a level score, but were unable to capitalize on chances. When the horn went off the final score was 2-1 in favor of Colorado Mesa.

At 2-11-3 overall and 1-8-3 in RMAC play, South Dakota Mines comes into Golden with just two matches remaining in 2018. The Hardrockers conference record eliminates them from a shot at the RMAC Tournament.

Senior Ian DeBois represents SDSMT's offensive threat with five goals on the season. Daledovich minds the net for the Hardrockers with a record of 2-10-3, boasting two shutouts with a 1.59 goals-against average and a .769 save percentage. Daledovich has 83 saves on the year.
