RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team pulled off the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference weekend sweep with a very impressive 73-63 victory over the No. 13 ranked Fort Lewis College Lady Skyhawks Saturday night at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.
The Hardrockers, who defeated Adams State a night earlier, had an impressive second quarter and then held off a late comeback from the visitors to improve their overall record to 12-5 on the season and 7-4 in the RMAC.
The Skyhawks came in with a lot of intensity to start the game and after taking a six-point edge midway through the first quarter, were up by just two at the first break, 10-8. The second period belonged to the Hardrockers, outscoring FLC, 22-6, and led by 14 at the half, 30-16.
The 'Rockers continued their surge into the third quarter, extending their lead to 16 points with 4:41 to go in the period. Fort Lewis was finally able to regroup and attempt a rally. The visitors bettered SD Mines, 25-21, in the third quarter, but the Hardrockers held onto a 10-point advantage, 51-41. Both squads cashed in for 22 points over the final 10 minutes.
The Hardrockers shot 43.1 percent from the field, making good on 22-51 shots, including 10-20 from behind the arch and 19-23 from the foul line. SD Mines collected 29 rebounds, recorded 18 assists, 10 steals and one blocked shot.
Fort Lewis finished the night shooting 38.1 percent hitting 24-63 attempts. They were just 4-17 from three-point range and 11-13 from the free throw line. Skyhawks came down with 33 rebounds, 11 assists, eight steals and four blocked shots.
Leading the way for the Lady Hardrockers was junior
Taylor Molstad with 17 points, two rebounds and three assists. Sophomore
Cooper Courtney tacked on 12 markers and two assists and sophomore
Anna Haugen pulled off the double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Senior
Payton Humpal contributed with nine points (3-3 from three-point range) as freshman
Ryan Weiss.
The Skyhawks (15-3, 9-3) were paced by the RMAC leading scorer, Vivian Gray, with 21 points, while Astea Reed added 15 markers and Alyssa Yocky cashed in for 14.
Next up the Hardrockers have a big matchup against Black Hills State Tuesday night in Spearfish in the rivalry game.
