SPEARFISH, S.D. --- There was little the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team could do to slow the offensive onslaught of rival Black Hills State Tuesday night as the Lady Jackets overwhelmed the Hardrockers, 82-50, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup at the Young Center in Spearfish, S.D.
SD Mines put up a good fight, but the host school could not be slowed, shooting 70 percent from the field in the first half. BHSU led by eight after the first quarter, 23-15, and then bettered the 'Rockers, 16-11, in the second frame and went into halftime with a 13-point advantage, 39-26.
The Jackets delivered the knockout blow in the third quarter, outscoring SD Mines, 28-11, and entered the fourth quarter with a 65-37 edge. The Jackets put up 15 markers over the final 10 minutes while the Lady 'Rockers registered 13 points.
The 'Rockers finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field making good on 17-43 attempts, including 7-21 from three-point range and were 9-13 from the free throw line. The visitors came down with 18 rebounds, recorded seven assists and five steals.
After the accurate shooting in the first half, the Yellow Jackets closed out the game connecting on 27-52 attempts for 52 percent. They hit on 11-26 from behind the arch and had a 17-19 showing from the foul line. The home team came down with 35 rebounds, 19 assists, nine steals and two blocks.
Individually for the Hardrockers, freshman
Ryan Weiss paced the team with 10 points, while sophomore
Sami Steffeck contributed with eight markers.
The loss drops SD Mines to 12-6 on the season and 7-5 in conference play. Next up the Hardrockers are back home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against Westminster College at the King Center.
