RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team took the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions to overtime Friday night during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.
In overtime, the Hardrockers fell flat as UCCS mounted a scoring charge, outscoring the home team, 16-6, to escape with a 95-85 win. The win pushed the Mountain Lions to 9-12 on the season and 8-8 in the RMAC while SD Mines fell to 9-12 on the season and are now 6-11 in conference play.
The Hardrockers held the advantage for a majority of the game. They're largest lead was 11 points midway through the first half and went into halftime with a three-point edge, 47-44. UCCS was able to force overtime outscoring the home team, 35-32, in the second period. UCCS carried the momentum heading into overtime, while SD Mines struggled to keep pace as the ball would not fall through the hoop for the Hardrockers.
SD Mines finished the game shooting 41 percent hitting 29-71 attempts (8-21 from the arc), and made good on 19-26 from the free throw line. The 'Rockers collected 37 rebounds (16 offensive), had 13 assists, three steals and four blocks.
The Mountain Lions shot 51 percent on the night getting 35-69 (11-21 from the arc), and were 14-25 from the foul line. They tacked on 38 rebounds, 17 assists, four steals and four blocks.
Individually for the Hardrockers, senior
Konor Kulas recorded his eighth double-double of the season dishing in 26 points and collected 13 rebounds. He added four assists and a steal. Senior
Troy Whiteto, II added 15 points, two rebounds and one steal while junior
Brian Orr contributed with 13 points, three assists and one rebound. Senior
Jamall Taylor added 11 points and an assist.
UCCS was paced in scoring by Justin Smith with 27 points while teammate Bled Avdili added 21 and Elijah Ross had 17.
Next up, the Hardrockers will take on MSU-Denver Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in SD Mines' final home game of the season at the King Center.
