RAPID CITY, S.D --- With 10 lead changes and the score tied 12 times, it took double overtime to decide the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup between the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team and the Regis University Lady Rangers Saturday afternoon at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.
Unfortunately for the Lady 'Rockers, Regis got the upper hand late in the second extra period and was able to hold off one last scoring attempt by the home team to win the bout, 77-75.
Regis took the first quarter lead, 15-10, and then went into halftime up by six points, 32-26. SD Mines rallied back in the third quarter, outscoring the Rangers, 19-15, and then knotted the game, 59-59, at the end of regulation. Both teams scored nine in the first OT, and then Regis notched nine in the final five minutes while the 'Rockers netted seven markers.
The Hardrockers finished the game shooting 46.6 percent from the field making good on 27-58 attempt, including 9-21 from three-point range and 12-18 from the free throw line. SD Mines collected 23 rebounds, recorded 12 assist, seven steals and on block.
Regis ended the game making good on 29-69 baskets, including a 8-27 performance from behind the arc and 11-13 showing at the foul line. The Rangers tacked on 38 rebounds, had 21 assists, four steals and two blocks.
The Hardrockers had a well balanced offense as four players earned double digits. Sophomore
Anna Haugen led the charge with 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. Junior
Taylor Molstad kept pace with 18 markers, three rebounds and two assists. Sophomore
Sami Steffeck and freshman
Ryan Weiss both contributed with 10 points each.
Regis had two players breach the 20-point mark. Chante Church had 24 and Mary Singler put up 23.
The loss drops SD Mines to 7-4 on the season and 3-3 in the RMAC. Next up, the Hardrockers have a nonconference bout against Nebraska Christian University Monday at 5 p.m.;
