RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The MSU Denver Lady Roadrunners broke a halftime stalemate over the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team and steal the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference bout of the season, defeating the Lady Hardrockers, 70-58, Friday evening at the King Center in Rapid City.
The teams were tied, 27-27, going into halftime, but the visitors gained a slight edge in the third quarter, outscoring SD Mines, 21-15, and started the fourth quarter with a 48-42 advantage and then added 22 markers over the final 10 minutes while SD Mines posted 16 points.
The Hardrockers finished the game shooting 31.7 from the field, cashing in on 20-63 attempts, including a 7-26 performance from three-point range and 11-14 from the free throw line. The Roadrunners made good on 29-57 attempts to shoot 50.9 percent from the field, with 6-18 from behind the arc and 6-12 from the foul line.
The Roadrunners won the rebounding battle, collecting 40 while the 'Rockers came down with 24. SD Mines recorded nine assists and seven steals. MSUD notched 21 assists, six steals and three blocks.
Individually, the 'Rockers were paced by sophomores Sami Steffeck and Cooper Courtney as both had 13 points. Freshman Ryan Weiss added eight points and junior Tayor Molstad and senior Krista Showalter both put up six points.
The loss drops SD Mines to 4-2 on the season and open RMAC play 0-1. Next up, the Hardrocker Women play host to University of Colorado Colorado Springs in 3:30 p.m. meeting at the King Center on Saturday.
