RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team had a very competitive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Mountain Lions at the King Center in Rapid City, but could not come away with the result they were after as UCCS won over the Hardrockers, 3-0.
SD Mines had another solid outing jumping out to an early lead, but the Mountain Lions were able to claw their way back to win the first set. After the second game went the way of the visitors, they used that momentum to gain a big edge in the third set. The Hardrockers were persistent down the stretch and nearly pulled off a late rally being down by five points. UCCS was able to squeeze out one final point to keep SD Mines' momentum from gaining maximum strength.
The Mountain Lions defeated SD Mines, 25-22, 25-18, 25-23. The Hardrockers finished the match with 32 kills and had a hitting percentage of .145. The home team also collected 32 assists, 59 digs and had five total blocks. UCCS came away from the match with 42 kills, a .198 hitting percentage, 41 assists, 67 digs and six total blocks.
Individually for the Hardrockers, junior
Anna Breidt had a great outing with 12 kills, a .440 hitting percentage and recorded five assisted blocks. Senior
Mikkella Reese finished with eight kills and senior
Emily Newton added six. Freshman setter
Emma Eckel was responsible for 30 of the team's 32 assists and led the 'Rockers with 14 digs and two assisted blocks. Junior
Alye Wagner had 12 digs for the home team.
