PUEBLO, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team was tripped up Friday night when the Hardrockers fell to the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, 4-2, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in Pueblo, Colo.
It started off with a good competitive matchup, but the momentum swung the way of the home team, as CSUP collected three goals in the first half. The 'Rockers kept up the fight in the second half, notching a goal midway through to close the deficit to one goal, but a late penalty kick by the ThunderWolves sealed the win.
CSU-Pueblo drew first blood, when Brayden Ballman notched a goal with an assist from Connor Marth during the ninth minute. The Hardrockers tied the game 10 minutes later when
Justin Barkow found the back of the net off an assist from
Will Tibbitt (19:28).
The ThunderWolves tacked on two more goals before halftime. Tanner Pile scored at the 25:23 mark on an assist from Marth and then Marth added another assisted after Brayden Ballman recorded a goal in the 36
th minute.
The Hardrockers got within a goal at the 54:55 mark when
David Pineda booted in a goal on a free kick. CSUP put the game out of reach when Ballman made good on a penalty kick with 90 seconds remaining in the game.
SD Mines finished with 11 shots in the game, four on goal; while CSU-Pueblo took 12 shots, eight were on goal.
Barkow led the way for the 'Rockers with two shots.
Noah McKenzie and
Charles Kieffer also had two shots while Pineda, Bouchard,
Lars Skau,
Trenton Magryta and
Cameron Thompson were all credited with one.
Kyle Daledovich suffered the loss for SD Mines playing all 90 minutes in goal. He faced eight shots and came up with four saves.
The loss drops SD Mines to 3-9-2 on the season and 2-9 in conference play. Next up, the Hardrockers will challenge the UCCS Mountain Lions Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
