Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- A late rally fell short for the South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team Sunday afternoon during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup against Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo., as the Mavericks came away with a 4-2 victory.
Mesa notched three goals in the first half and added another early in the second period before SD Mines could get things going.
SD Mines first goal came during the 77
th minute when sophomore
David Pineda made good on a penalty kick to notch his first goal of the season. Eight minutes later senior
Andreas Skau also recorded his first goal of the season, also on a penalty kick, at the 85:24 mark.
The Mavericks were the aggressors for a majority of the game collecting 22 total shots (13 on goal) while the Hardrockers managed eight total shots (six on goal). Freshman Justin Barklow paced SD Mines with four shots, three on goal while Skau, sophomore Ian Debois, Pineda and junior
David Cabrera all posted on shot. Hardrocker sophomore
Kyle Daledovich played the full 90 minutes as goalkeeper where he recorded nine saves.
The Hardrockers fall to 0-7 on the season and 0-4 in the RMAC while Mesa improved to 4-1-3 on the season and 3-0-1 in the conference.
Next up, SD Mines makes yet another trip to Colorado, taking on Colorado School of Mines Friday in a 7 p.m. contest and then finally have a home opener Sunday against Colorado Christian in their home opener at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City at 1 p.m. (MST).
