RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team hits the road this weekend which will be the Hardrockers fourth consecutive road trip of the season. Friday, Regis University will play host to the Hardrockers and then face Colorado Mesa on Sunday.
The Regis Rangers boast a 5-0 record, are 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and ranked 10th in all of NCAA Div. II men's soccer in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll. The game will be held in Denver, Colo.
This past weekend, Regis picked up wins over Adams State and Fort Lewis, posting scores of 2-1 in both outings. SD Mines faced the same opponents --- however suffered two heartbreaking losses --- both games went to overtime.
"Anytime you have the opportunity to take on the No. 10 team in the country it's great for our guys," said SD Mines men's soccer head coach
Jordan Kadlec. "That's one of the great things about the RMAC -- each week we get to go out and play a very high level of competition."
Sunday's matchup has the Hardrockers traveling to Grand Junction, Colo., to battle the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. On the season CMU has a record of 2-1-3. The Mavericks have one win and one tie in conference play. Last season the Hardrockers struggled in their two matches against CMU, losing by a combined total of seven goals.
Although the Hardrockers have not achieved the results they would like, the stat sheet shows they have improved immensely over last season and are playing a lot more competitive style of soccer. Through the first five games they have scored twice as many goals this season as last season, and conceded four fewer goals than in 2015.
