Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team suffered another heartbreaking defeat in the waning seconds of double overtime to at the hands of the Adams State Grizzlies, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in Alamosa, Colo., during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
It was another heated game for the Grizzlies (4-2) which resulted in 5 total yellow cards, and a red card against the Hardrockers.
Adams State's Josue Murillo posted the game's first score in the first period to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 halftime lead. Teammate
Ruben Molinar added another goal by way of a penalty kick early in the second half to boost the score to 2-0.
Only about a minute later, the Hardrockers would answer and trim the deficit when freshman Justin Barklow found the back of the net off an assist from senior Eric Fenske.
At the 85:31 mark, SD Mines tied things up with a goal from sophomore Ian Debois and sent the game to overtime.
The first overtime would have its close moments, but ultimately remained scoreless until the horn. Nearing the end of overtime No. 2, ASU's
Ethan Jackson snuck one in for the win with only 30 seconds remaining.
All 3 goals for ASU today, were the first goals of the year for the players who made them.
"Credit goes to SD Mines today for how they played," said Adams State head coach
Brett Bentley. "They came out and jumped all over us and made life difficult. I'm always pleased with a win, however I can't say I'm very happy with how we played."
Once again the Hardrockers proved to be the aggressor taking 21 shots in the game (two on goal) while Adams State had 14 (three on goal). Barklow finished with six shots, Debois recorded four shots, junior
Lane Schroeder tacked on three shots and sophomore
David Pineda and senior
Andreas Skau both had two. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jack Seifert played the entire game, collecting five saves.
"It was a tough loss for the Hardrockers today," said Hardrocker head coach
Jordan Kadlec. "We competed hard and the whole team stepped up when we received a red card and were forced to play a man down. It stings a little for our guys, but we will learn from this and get back out there next week."
The loss drops SD Mines to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the RMAC. The Hardrockers are back on the road next weekend in Colorado traveling to Regis University on Friday and then will face Colorado Mesa Sunday.
