FLC Squeaks Out OT Win Over SD Mines Soccer, 2-1

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Friday afternoon against Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. Even though the 2016 version wasn't a repeat of last year's 5-4 OT shootout, Friday's matchup was just as exciting.

Fort Lewis won the game, 2-1, in overtime despite an impressive defensive effort on the part of the Hardrockers who had to fend off a relentless attacking Skyhawks team for much of the second period.

The stats also looked a little one-sided as Fort Lewis notched 29 shots in the game to just six by the Hardrockers. The Skyhawks put 17 shots on goal while SD Mines had one shot on goal.

"Our guys played extremely well this afternoon," said Hardrocker soccer head coach Jordan Kadlec. "We have to respond better after scoring goals. We went up with 35 minutes left in the game and immediately dropped our intensity. Once we get a taste of success, we have to want more until the final whistle."

SD Mines broke the 0-0 halftime score when Hardrocker senior Lane Schroeder rifled a shot from outside the box that found the net on the upper right side during the 50th minute of play. Junior David Cabrera was credited with the assists.

Fort Lewis knotted the game during the 79th minute when a header found its way into the goal.  Despite the goal, SD Mines sophomore Jack Seifert was in goal for the entire game where he recorded 15 saves during the game.

In the first minute of overtime, FLC's Alex Tillberry hit the shot of the game, blasting one from 30 yards out, past the entire SD Mines defense and into the net for the match.
"We tried to weather the storm as much as we could, but Fort Lewis was peppering our goal with shot after shot," Kadlec said. "Their goal in overtime was one of the better goals I've ever seen in college soccer."

Schroeder finished with three shots in the game while freshman Justin Barklow and senior Brandon Lind both recorded one each.

"We will regroup, learn from our mistakes and prepare for Adams State on Sunday," Kadlec added.

The Hardrockers are 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in RMAC play and will take on Adams State Sunday in a 12 p.m. matchup in Alamosa, Colo., in another conference matchup.
