SD Mines WBB Gets Revenge On Colorado Mines, 75-64

GOLDEN, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team sent 2016 out with a bang Saturday, handing Colorado Mines a double-digit defeat, 75-64, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference New Year's Eve game in Golden, Colo.

The Hardrockers exacted some revenge on the Orediggers from back on Dec. 10, when Colorado Mines escaped Rapid City with a 64-61 overtime win.

SD Mines offensive effort was outstanding Saturday as the Hardrockers were able to drive the lane and get a lot of their point productions in the paint. Colorado Mines on the other hand had difficulty keeping pace and could not match the output of the visitors.

SD Mines took a three-point lead after the first quarter, 15-12, and never looked back. The Lady 'Rockers outscored the Orediggers, 22-12, in the second quarter to lead by 13 at the half, 37-24. That proved to be the biggest key to the game. SD Mines dished in 19 points in the third quarter and headed into the final frame ahead, 57-41.

In the fourth quarter, Colorado got within nine points, but SD Mines surged back out in front and, with 2:15 left in regulation, had extended their edged to 17 points.

The Lady Hardrockers were red hot from the field, shooting 48 percent in the game, converting 24-50 attempts, including six three-pointers, as well as a 21-28 performance from the free throw line. SD Mines grabbed 34 rebounds, had 17 assists, seven steals and four blocks.

The Orediggers made good on 24-67 attempts for 36 percent shooting from the field. They hit only three shots from behind the arc, were 13-18 from the foul line, had 34 rebounds, 13 assists, nine steals and two blocks.

"Extremely proud of the ladies with their effort today," said Hardrocker women's basketball head coach Ryan Larsen. "We executed our defensive game plan very well and finished defensive possessions with rebounds. Offensively we played very well --- 17 assists and four kids in double figures is a great game."

The Hardrockers were led by freshman Anna Haugen, who finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. She was 5-6 from the field and made good on 10-14 from the free throw line.

"Anna Haugen was huge at the free throw line and a number of other kids made big shots the entire second half," Larsen added. "Great team win for the Hardrockers."

Fellow Hardrocker freshman Sami Steffeck tacked on 16 points, five rebounds and one block, senior Megan Rohrer posted 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and sophomore Taylor Molstad contributed with 11 points and three rebounds.

The Orediggers, suffering just their second loss at home, were led by Mikaele Moore with 14 points, Laura Tyree added 13, Cassidy Budge had 11 and Anna Kollmoren put up 10 points.

The Hardrockers, picked up their second win in-a-row (both on the road), improved to 5-8 on the season and are now 3-5 in the conference. SD Mines returns home this weekend to face Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday followed by a rematch with New Mexico Highlands Saturday.
