BISMARCK, N.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team once again used the second half of play to break open a tight game as the Hardrockers defeated the University of Mary Marauders, 77-63, Tuesday night on the road in Bismarck, N.D.
The Hardrockers, now a three-game win streak, earned the non-conference victory over their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe, outscoring their hosts, 42-26, in the final 20 minutes of the game. It's the first win over Mary since Dec. 16, 2005.
The Hardrockers, who have made a name for themselves on defense, got it done Tuesday with a solid offensive output. SD Mines shot 62 percent from the field converting 26-42 attempts, including a season high 11 three-pointers, as well as a 14-16 effort from the free throw line.
The Marauders on the other hand were a little cold from the field, making good on 26-64 shots for 41 percent. Mary was just 5-6 from the foul line and converted six of 21 from behind the arc.
SD Mines trailed by two points at the half, 37-35.
"We guarded to the scout on Mary as close to perfect as a team can do," said Hardrocker men's basketball head coach
Jason Henry. "I'm very happy to see our guys turn the corner on the mental side. We executed on offense but still turned it over too much in the first half. We were able to fix that in the second half and played well."
The Hardrockers leaned on their upperclassmen on offense as
Konor Kulas,
Marco Pascolo and
Jamall Taylor all scored in the double digits Tuesay and the team saw great play out of freshman
Jake Heath.
Kulas kept pace with his season averages with another double-double. He had a game-high 23 points and a game high 12 rebounds as well as getting credit for seven assists. Pascolo cashed in for 16 markers, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block. Taylor contributed with 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Heath delivered 13 points (all from three-point range) and had four assists.
"It was really a super road win for Hardrockers," Henry added.
The win gives SD Mines a 3-2 overall record and will return home for a non-conference game against Presentation College Saturday at the King Center for a 5 p.m. tipoff.
