SD Mines Men Make It 4 Straight With Win Over Saints, 86-69

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four Saturday night as the Hardrockers defeated the Presentation College Saints, 85-69, at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D., to close out the non-conference portion of the 2016-17 schedule.

South Dakota Mines had a bit of a height advantage over the Saints which the home team was able to exploit. The Hardrockers scored a lot of their points on the inside and off second-chance opportunities which helped on the perimeter down the stretch.

"We played a lot of inside-out tonight," said Hardrocker men's basketball head coach Jason Henry. "We went to the post quite a bit and we knew that we had an advantage down there. Konor Kulas did a great job for us in the paint. The same with the rebounding. We did a great job of keeping them off the boards."

SD Mines finished the game shooting 50 percent from the field converting 31-62 attempts, including nine from the three-point line. They hit 14-17 from the foul line for 82 percent and collected 31 rebounds, 17 assists, eight steals and two blocks.

Presentation College made good on 22-56 from the field for 39 percent, but hit 11 three-pointers. They were good on 14-15 from the free throw line, had 28 rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks.

One of the biggest factors in Saturday's outcome were the turnovers. The Saints committed 16 turnovers which SD Mines was able to convert at the other end. The Hardrockers nabbed 23 points from the exchange. Despite that, the visitors still managed a competitive game.

"Presentation College is pretty tenacious," Henry said. "They aren't very big but they came at us hard and were competitive. They hit some shots down the stretch but thankfully we had a pretty good lead or it could have been interesting there at the end."

SD Mines went into the half leading, 39-27. The second period, the Hardrockers barely outscored the Saints, 46-42. SD Mines' biggest lead was 23 points midway through the second half, but PC got to within eight points with just over two minutes to go.

The Hardrockers had four players reach double figures. Kulas led all scorers with 28 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, two steals and a block. Freshman Jake Heath hit four shots from behind the arch and closed out the game with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Jamall Taylor added 13 points for the Hardrockers and junior Brian Orr contributed with 11 points.

"Konor got it done on the inside and knocked down some shots for us at the end of the game which was big," Henry said. "It was really a great team effort tonight."

The Hardrockers improve its overall record to 4-2 on the season and will open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play this weekend in Colorado. SD Mines faces one of the top teams in the country when they take on MSU-Denver Friday followed by a trip to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Saturday.
