Box Score RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team found themselves in a real brawl Friday afternoon as the Hardrockers played host to the MSU-Denver Roadrunners during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference bout at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City. S.D.
It was one of the more physical contests that SD Mines has been involved in this season and despite matching up very well, SD Mines fell to MSU-Denver, 2-1, in overtime.
"That was a very physical back-and-forth game out there today. It was great to see our guys battle hard against one of the RMAC top teams," said Hardrocker head coach
Jordan Kadlec. "But once again we were unable to close out the game when we had the momentum. We are still learning how to do that. But I am proud of this team for the way they competed today. We're so close to getting the result we deserve."
The Roadrunners played the role of the aggressor for most of the day, pressing the ball on the Hardrockers side of the field all day. In the 40
th minute, MSU-Denver broke the stalemate when Arturo Vega made good on a penalty kick from about 15 yards out.
SD Mines fought back in the second half and in the 71
st minute found the drive the team needed when freshman
Justin Barkow cut through the middle of the field and blasted a ball past the goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie.
In overtime, MSUD's Yannick Schad was able to stroke a ball and ended the game at the 91:39 mark.
"That ball just got caught up in the crowd and their guy had an open look which he was successful on," Kadlec said. "If we would have played a little better defense around the net, the outcome could have gone the other way."
The Roadrunners finished with 20 shots in the game to seven for the Hardrockers. Barkow notched four shots for SD Mines while senior
Erik Fenske, junior
Lane Schroeder and senior
Andreas Skau all delivered one shot. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kyle Daledovich played the entire game with 10 saves in the match.
"Kyle did an outstanding job today in goal for the Hardrockers," Kadlec added. "He kept us in the fight."
