RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team gave the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves quite a scare Friday afternoon, rallying back from a three-goal deficit with under five minutes to play, but the visitors were able to survive the onslaught and pick up a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over the Hardrockers, 3-2, at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City.
Â
Trailing, 3-0, with just under 20 minutes to play in the game, the Hardrockers amped up their intensity and started taking it to the Thunderwolves. SD Mines senior
David Cabrera got the Hardrockers on the scoreboard in the 82
nd minute when he booted a penalty kick past replacement CSUP goalie Chandler Syrett.
Â
About five minutes later, sophomore Ian Debois netted a ball off an assist from junior
Lane Schroeder to breathe life into the Hardrockers as the home team trailed, 3-2. Unfortunately, the Thunderwolves were able to hold off any late game heroics from the Hardrockers.
Â
"It got really interesting at the end there," said Hardrocker men's soccer head coach
Jordan Kadlec. "That's what you have to love about this team. They won't give up. I think if you've watched us compete this year you can see that. We didn't get the result but we did give it our all."
Â
It was a pretty even back and forth for the most part Friday. Both teams tallied 11 shots in the game. SD Mines finished with nine shots on goal to six by the Thunderwolves.
Â
Individually for the Hardrockers, senior
Andreas Skau collected three shots in the game, Cabrera and Debois both had two while Schroeder, junior
Darin James and junior
James Wagner all notched one. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kyle Daledovich came up with three saves on the day.
Â
The loss drops SD Mines to 2-12 on the season and 2-10 in RMAC play. Next up the Hardrockers are home against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks Friday in a 6 p.m. matchup at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City.
