Griffins Spoil Hardrocker Soccer's Night With 2-1 Result

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team put up a good fight Friday night, but couldn't quite get over the hump as the Hardrockers fell to the Westminster College Griffins, 2-1, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City, S.D.

After the Griffins took a 1-0 advantage in the first half, the Hardrockers were able to regroup and take it to the visitors from Utah.  SD Mines junior Lars Skau knotted the game during the 55th minute when his brother and senior Andreas Skau entered the ball toward the net after a foul where Lars booted it right down the middle and in for a score.

"That was a great goal for us," said Hardrocker men's soccer head coach Jordan Kadlec. "Not only did it get us back in the game, but it also energized our team as well as the great crowd we had there tonight and got us going for the rest of night."

Unfortunately a short time later, Westminster's Brock Charlesworth played spoiler after controlling a rebounded ball from the SD Mines goal and fired it back into the net during the 57th minute.

The Hardrockers had a few more opportunities to score, right down to the last ticks on the clock, but couldn't get the result they were looking for. The home team suffered the loss and dropped to 2-14 on the season and 2-11 in the RMAC.

It was a pretty even competition on paper as Westminster collected 10 shots and SD Mines tallied eight. Both teams finished with five shots on goal.

Individually for the Hardrockers, Andreas Skau had two shots, both on goal along with an assist. Lars Skau, freshman Justin Barkow, junior Lane Schroeder and sophomore Ian Debois were all credited with one shot during the game.  Sophomore Jack Seifert played the whole game at goalkeeper where he got three saves.

"Again it was a good effort tonight for our Hardrockers and our seniors played extremely well," Kadlec said. "It's disappointing we couldn't get a win for them tonight but I am proud of their competitiveness."

SD Mines will close out the season Sunday morning when the Hardrockers take on Colorado Mesa in an 11 a.m. game at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City.
