Football Returns Home to Face Michigan Tech

RAPID CITY, SD South Dakota Mines Football is back at home on Thursday to play (RV) Michigan Tech for their first game at O'Harra Stadium at 6 p.m.

Series History

Michigan Tech leads the all-time series 1-0 after they won a historic game in Houghton, Michigan, in 2024. The Huskies won that game 52-50 in four overtimes. South Dakota Mines recorded 547 total yards of offense in the loss. Mason Galbreath recorded 10 receptions for 160 yards with one touchdown in that game.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech knocked off #16 Bemidji State 37-17 last Thursday at Kearly Stadium. Quarterback Alex Bueno was 16-for-25 with 207 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 102 yards and a rushing touchdown in his collegiate debut. Jake Rueff caught five passes for 70 yards and one touchdown. Joe Marano recorded two sacks for the Huskies.

The Huskies were picked to finish in fifth place in the GLIAC this season. They went 7-4 last year with a 4-3 record in the GLIAC. Star wide receiver Ethan Champney highlights the returners for Michigan Tech after he was third in the GLIAC in receiving yards with 631 last year. Jake Rueff led the team on the ground in 2024 with 571 rushing yards. He returns for his junior season.

About the Hardrockers

South Dakota Mines is coming off a 43-0 loss last week at #6 CSU Pueblo. In his collegiate debut, Jacoby Ogbonna led the team with seven catches for 93 yards, including a catch for 25 yards. Aiden Werlinger recorded a forced fumble while Charlie Johnson was able to recover it in that game. Werlinger and Zachary Young both recorded 1.5 tackles for loss against the ThunderWolves.

In the RMAC Preseason Poll, South Dakota Mines was picked to finish in fifth place, tied with Black Hills State. All four teams ahead of the Hardrockers are currently ranked or receiving votes in the AFCA Top 25. AJ Kelly was named to the RMAC All Preseason Team and highlights the returners for the Hardrockers on offense. Kelly returns to the offensive line after he was a Second Team All-RMAC selection last season.

What's Next

Following this contest, the Hardrockers will go on the road for two straight weeks. They will play Upper Iowa on Sept. 13 at 1:30 p.m. and New Mexico Highlands on Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. before returning home on Sept. 27.
