Soccer Battles in Season Opening Defeat

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The South Dakota Mines soccer team opened its season on Friday afternoon, taking on Emmanuel University in a neutral site game hosted by Colorado Christian.

An early penalty kick goal by Emmanuel in the second minute put the Hardrockers in a tough spot, chasing the game from the get-go, but they continued to battle throughout the contest, going into the half with the game still in reach at the same score, Emmanuel 1, Hardrockers 0.

Overall, in the second half, the Hardrockers played better, pushing the ball into dangerous situations, more often and earning the lone corner kick in that half. For the game, South Dakota Mines had six shots with four coming on goal, but three of those came in the second half, including a goal by Jayden Roque in the 72nd minutes off a rebound, but SDM was already trailing 2-0 at that point and they still needed to find a goal to tie. The Hardrockers pushed in the final minutes, but were unable to find the tying goal, falling to 0-1 to begin the season.

Notes – Jayden Roque's goal was the first of his collegiate career…Zach Peroff led the team in shots with two, while hitting one on goal…Other shots on goal came from Hayden Jaramillo and Trent Ripley…Daniel Frietas and Charles Thompson split time in goal with each playing one half.

Up Next – South Dakota Mines is back in action at the same location on Sunday, this time taking on William Jewell for a noon matchup.
