Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo.--- The South Dakota Mines men's basketball team in their final regular season game of the season, battled with CCU but were not able to come out with a victory, falling in overtime.
How it Happened –The Hardrockers started the first half slowly, trailing 10-2, but would eventually get going, pulling to within four, 17-13 after a
Keagen Smith three.
Alejandro Rama would follow with a trey of his own, cutting the deficit to just one. Following the media timeout,
Brevin Walter would give South Dakota Mines its first lead, 18-17 after a pair of free throws. Walter would continue the momentum with a nifty post move and finish and a jumper giving him eight, but the lead was still just three with DJ McDonald answering for the Cougars. Later, an 8-0 CCU run would give them a 32-26 lead with 4:22 remaining in the first half. CCU would continue their momentum, going into the half leading 41-31.
Early in the second half, Walter hit a three to get some momentum kick started for the Hardrockers as Rama would follow with another three, and suddenly, the deficit was just four, 41-37. Later, five straight points from
Kolten Mortensen would pull South Dakota Mines to within 1, 47-46. Trailing by 5, the Hardrockers would stay hot from three, getting one from Rama, followed by Smith to give the 'Rockers a 51-50 advantage. CCU would immediately answer with threes from McDonald and Isaiah Alonzo giving the Cougars a five-point advantage. The two teams would continue to trade buckets, with CCU holding a slight, one-point advantage, 60-59 with 4:20 remaining. Trailing by 3 with 1:06 to go, Rama found Mortensen for a three, tying it up at 65. DJ McDonald answered with a three of his own, giving CCU back the lead only to be answered by Rama with 20 seconds to play. On the final possession, CCU would not be able to hit a shot and we would head to overtime.
Early in the overtime period, the two teams would continue to answer each other, with a
Brevin Walter and-1 tying it up at 73 with 2:09 to go. With 1:03 to go, Rama would drill a three, giving the 'Rockers a one-point lead, 78-77. On the other end, CCU would hit a pair of free throws. The Hardrockers would have a couple of chances down the stretch, but couldn't capitalize, falling 78-77.
