CHADRON, Neb.--- The South Dakota Mines women's basketball team earned the road win against Chadron State on Tuesday afternoon by a score of 64-58.
How it Happened –The Hardrockers trailed early in the contest 15-9 through the first five minutes, before a
Madelyn Heiser three, cut the deficit to three with 3:41 left to play in the first quarter. The Hardrockers' defense came alive late in the quarter allowing the offense to catch up. A
Piper Bauer layup, cut the deficit to one, 17-16.. The 'Rockers grabbed their first lead 18-17 with a layup from
Megan Alexander, but the Eagles regained the lead and went into the second quarter up 21-18.
Bauer scored the first points in the second quarter for the 'Rockers to bring the score to 23-21 in favor of the Eagles.
Naomi Hidalgo hit two free throws to tie the game 23-23 with 6:20 left in the half. Scoring was at a premium for the rest of the half and the two teams would go back and forth until
Bailey Johnson hit a three at the buzzer to give the Hardrockers a 30-27 lead at the half.
The Hardrockers took their biggest lead of the night when Johnson made a layup with 7:38 left, as they led by 5. Bauer put South Dakota Mines back up by five with a 3-pointer with 3:00 minutes left in the quarter. In the third quarter, the 'Rockers scored 16 points to take a 46-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Offensively,
Bailey Johnson stared off the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, increasing the lead to 7, and the Hardrockers would hold onto that lead over the next several minutes. With 3:15 left in the game Hidalgo's layup gave the Rockers a 58-52 lead. The 'Rockers would hold on for the 64-58 victory.
Notes – The Hardrockers had three players in double digits in the win…Bauer led the Rockers with 20 points, while Johnson added 17…Hidalgo chipped in 14 in the win…
Sydnee Durtsche grabbed 12 boards for the Hardrockers…Defensively, South Dakota Mines allowed Chadron State to hit just 20% of their three-point shots.
Up Next – The Rockers will be back on the court for the final game of the year against Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colo. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
