Men's Basketball Falls in Season Opener

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines men's basketball team held their home opener against Texas A&M – Kingsville.
 
In a low-scoring, defensive battle, the Hardrockers were not able to emerge with the victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Texas A&M – Kingsville got out to an early lead, 8-7 but the Hardrockers would get their offense going and out to an 18-12 lead after a pair of three pointers from Keagen Smith and Brannagh Walsh. For the last 10 minutes of the first half, the two offenses would have a hard time scoing as the Hardrockers would score just 8 more points, while the Javelinas would score 10, giving South Dakota Mines a 26-22 lead at halftime.
 
Early in the second half, Texas A&M – Kingsville would use a 6-0 run to tie the game at 28 and then the two teams would battle back and forth with the two teams trading leads. The Hardrockers would go up, 41-38 on a layup by Walsh, but the Javelinas would answer with a 7-0 run to go up 45-41. They would expand their lead to 49-42 and the Hardrockers were unable to get it much close despite a couple of chances, the Hardrockers ultimately fell, 54-49.
 
NOTES
Brannagh Walsh and Keagen Smith each scored 11 points in the game…Alejandro Rama recorded 10 rebounds and five blocks.
 
UP NEXT
The Hardrockers will be back on the court tomorrow for another 6:00 p.m. matchup as they battle with Texas A&M International.
