RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines volleyball team hosted the Skyhawks from Fort Lewis College on Saturday afternoon. Despite a staggering 53 assists from
Kiley Metzger which is the most by a Hardrockers since 9/5/2015, the Hardrockers lost to the Skyhawks in four sets (25-15; 26-28; 25-27; 23-25).
The Hardrockers are now 14-8 overall and 7-3 in the RMAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hardrockers and Skyhawks were tied 5-5 when the Hardrockers took the lead for good in the first set. Three straight kills from
Jenna Curtis gave the Hardrockers a 16-9 advantage that they would never give up, eventually taking the first set 25-15.
In the second set, the Hardrockers held a slim lead for most of the set. South Dakota Mines would lead 19-15 but FLC would come back to tie the set 21-21. The set was a battle and would go to extras with the Skyhawks leading 25-24 until
Alessandra Meoni's kill tied the set 25-25. The two teams would trade points, tying it up again at 26 but the Skyhawks scored two straight points to take the set 28-26.
Fort Lewis took an early 3-0 lead in the third set, but the Hardrockers would go on a 4-0 run to take the lead 4-3. A kill by
Kiera Walsh gave South Dakota Mines a 16-12 advantage. The Skyhawks would come back to tie the set 17-17. With the Hardrockers down 24-22, they would put two points on the board to tie the set 24-24. Again, the third set would go extras but the Skyhawks would win the set 27-25.
Down 2-1 going into the fourth set, the Hardrockers started slow, trailing 11-6. There was no quit, however, as they battled back to tie the set 13-13 on a kill by Curtis. The Hardrockers scored four straight to lead 19-15, but FLC would gain momentum late in the set to win 25-23 and the match, 3-1.

The Hardrockers will host a pair of RMAC matches next weekend at the King Center. The Rockers will face Colorado Christian University on Friday night at 6:00 PM. Then on Saturday, the Hardrockers will host Chadron State College at 6:00 PM.
