SPEARFISH, S.D. --- On Tuesday night, the South Dakota Mines men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the 5th-ranked Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State. After a very exciting first half, the Hardrockers were not able to keep their offense going, falling to BHSU.
How it Happened – The offenses started the game hot, but Black Hills State out to a 17-13 lead with 12:50 to play in the first half.
Alejandro Rama was hot in the first half, converting an and-1, then hitting a layup for 14 first half points, and giving the Hardrockers a 23-19 advantage with 8:59 to go in the first half. A monster throwdown by Joel Scott would bring the score to within two, but the Hardrockers would continue to play well.
Brevin Walter hit a three with just over three minutes to play, giving the Hardrockers a six-point lead, 31-25. Later, up by just one,
Kolten Mortensen would pass out of a double team and Rama would hit another three, giving him 22. He would hit one more before a Sindou Cisse buzzer beater, would send it to half with the 'Rockers leading 37-36.
In the second half, Black Hills State would go on a 5-0 run heading into the media timeout at 14:02 with a 47-42 lead. Out of the timeout, the Hardrockers got a stop and a three from
Trase Olsen. With 10:11 to play, Cisse finished a layup, increasing the Yellow Jacket lead to 54-47, and would continue to expand it, leading 59-48 with 8:03 to play after a PJ Hayes three. The Hardrockers would not be able to halt the momentum and would eventually fall, 76-60.
Notes – Alejandro Rama was the game leader, scoring 25 points…
Brevin Walter and
Kolten Mortensen each recorded eight rebounds…Mortensen also added 3 assists to lead the team.
Up Next – The Hardrockers face off with Chadron State on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
