RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills Brawl was a close, defensive contest that was decided in the second half. Black Hills state was able to emerge with a 24-17 victory.
How It Happened – The Hardrockers got on the board first, with a 15-yard pass from
Jayden Johannsen to
Ty Harris after a muffed punt by Black Hills State.
That would be the only touchdown of the first quarter, and Black Hills State would go on to score the next 10 first on a 7 play 52-yard drive capped off by a Connor Boyd touchdown run, then a Coleman Chapman 31-yard field goal. South Dakota Mines would answer with a field goal of their own going 57 yards in 10 plays in just 52 seconds to set up the 42-yarder from
Connor Taylor.
In the second half Black Hills State would add 7 to the board in the third and fourth quarters, taking a 24-10 lead with a last ditch Hardrockers effort resulting in a touchdown connection from Johannsen to
Isaiah Eastman – the 15
th reception for Eastman, a new school record -but an unsuccessful onside kick would give the Yellow Jackets the 24-17 victory.
Notes –
Jayden Johannsen threw for 350 yards and two touchdowns…The Hardrockers were led by Orlando Westbrook-Sanchez, gaining 46 yards on 10 rushes…
Isaiah Eastman set a new school record with 15 receptions, going for 210 yards…
Hunter Newsom led the defense with 12 tackles, 2 for loss and 2 sacks…
Gavin Chaddock also recorded two tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble forced.
Up Next – The Hardrockers head to Gunnison next weekend as they take on Western Colorado for a 1:00 start on Oct. 8.
