'Rockers Play 10 Sets At UCCS Pod; Defeat UCCS, Fall To WCU

SDM Get 1st Ever Win Over Mountain Lions

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The South Dakota Mines women's volleyball team went the distance twice on Thursday during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod in Colorado Springs, Colorado, defeating one opponent in five sets and coming up just short against the other.
 
Against UCCS, the Hardrockers came out on the right end of long and competitive battle, winning the match, 3-2. SDM defeated the Mountain Lions, 16-25, 26-24, 27-29, 26-24, 17-15.
 
The Rockers came back from a 11-8 deficit in the final set to earn the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference bout. SDM finished with 55 kills on 162 attacks for a .136 hitting percentage. The visitors added 52 assists, 52 digs and 15 total blocks.
 
UCCS tallied 70 kills on 178 attacks for .174 hitting percentage. They added 63 assists, 67 digs and came up with nine total blocks.
 
For the match, Dejah Behrend and Jacey Koethe both registered 12 kills and Lily Bartling contributed with 10. Kassie Luce led the team with 26 assists while Kiley Metzger added 22. Anna Thomas recorded the most digs for the 'Rockers with 15 and Kristin Luce posted 10. Koethe led the way at the net on defense with two solo blocks and 10 assisted.
 
In the second match of the pod, it was Western State that squeaked out a fifth-set victory, winning over the 'Rockers, 3-2. The Mountaineers defeated SDM, 21-25, 27-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-10.
 
South Dakota Mines tallied 62 kills on 149 attacks and finished with a .275 hitting percentage. They tacked on 60 assists, came up with 70 digs and had 10 total blocks. Western registered 62 kills on 169 attacks and had a .201 hitting percentage to go along with their 57 assists, 59 digs and six total blocks.
 
Individually for the Hardrockers, Koethe led the way with 16 kills on 30 attacks for a .467 hitting percentage and tallied five assisted and one solo block. Victoria Zagorski also had a stellar performance with 14 kills on 24 attacks for a .458 hitting percentage. Bartling added 12 kills and Behrend notched 10. Metzger led the team with 34 assists and Kassie Luce added 24 while Thomas collected 19 digs, Metzger posted 11 and Kristin Luce added 10.
