Rapid City, SD --- On a cold Saturday afternoon in Rapid City, the South Dakota Mines women's basketball team was red hot in Goodell gymnasium, defeating the Colorado Christian University Cougars 71-41, during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
The 'Rockers got off to a slow start only scoring 11 points in the first quarter, but the Cougars only found the basket once in that 10-minute span as the home team led, 11-2. In the second quarter, the 'Rockers picked up the pace putting up 20 markers in the period and held a sizable advantage at the half, 31-14. Bailey Johnson led the balanced attack in the first half for SDM, scoring nine points.
The Hardrockers kept the momentum going in the third quarter, putting 21 more points on the board for a 52-28 advantage going into the final frame. The 'Rockers finished the game with 19 points in the fourth quarter. The Hardrockers never trailed in the 71-41 win.
The Hardrockers shot 52.9% from the floor with Johnson scoring 17 to lead the team. Ryan Weiss chipped in 12 while Juneau Jones added 10 in the win.
The win improves the Hardrockers record to 9-7 overall and 9-6 in the RMAC. The Hardrockers will be on the road next week against Black Hills State and Chadron State College.
