Hardrockers Square Off With BHSU, Post-Season Seeding In Limbo

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team will make its first-ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference post-season tournament appearance next Tuesday.

There is just one order of business left for the Hardrockers as they host Black Hills State in the regular-season finale Friday night at the King Center in a 7:30 p.m. matchup.  The Yellow Jackets are tied for first place in the RMAC standings (with Dixie State), with a 16-5 conference record and 19-8 overall record.

The final standings however are still very much up in the air as the outcome of Friday's games around the conference will determine the post-season seeding. The Hardrockers could finish anywhere from fourth-place and hosting a playoff game, to seventh place and traveling to Dixie State in Utah.

South Dakota Mines is coming off a weekend split, falling to University of Colorado Colorado Springs, 74-62, but bounced back with an impressive win over Colorado School of Mines, 78-73, for a season sweep.

SD Mines has three players averaging double-figures. Alec Williams leads the way with 17.6 points per conference game, 5 RPG and 3.6 APG. Mitchell Sueker averages 16 PPG and 5.9 RPG while Logan Elers averages 11.9 PPG, 5 RPG and 2 APG.

Both Williams and Elers have breached the 1,000-point mark in their college careers. Williams did by splitting time between SD Mines and MSU Denver while Elers, who also has over 500 rebounds, earned all his stats as a Hardrocker.

Looking at BHSU, the Yellow Jackets are led by freshman Joel Scott, averaging 17.4 points per conference game which is tied for fourth in the conference. His shooting rate of 59.9 percent is still second best in the conference. Senior Tyler Oliver and Scott sit third and twelfth in the conference for rebounding, with 7.0 and 6.0 rebounds per game, respectively. Oliver also adds 13 PPG and 3.5 assists per game. Junior Trey Whitley and senior Stefan Desnica have been key players to the Jacket's success as well. Whitley is averaging 14.4 PPG and 3 RPG while Desnica averages 8.9 PPG and 4.4 RPG. The Yellow Jackets also have an impressive, accumulative field goal percentage of 49%, which is second in the league.
