Hardrockers Face Tough Adams State Squad Saturday

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota Mines men's basketball team is making another trip to Colorado this weekend for another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup, this time traveling all the way to Alamosa, Colorado, to face the 2-0 Adams State University Grizzlies.

Adams State posted a 85-78 over UCCS last Saturday and then defeated CSU Pueblo Wednesday, 83-76. In Wednesday's game, the Grizzles were led by Kaelin Crane, who had 23 points and six rebounds. Also helping the Grizzlies to victory was Destan Williams with 20 points and five rebounds.

Another weapon for the Grizzlies is Fredrick Jackson, who was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week. Against UCCS, Jackson had a double-double as he scored a career-high 31 points and 11 rebounds. The senior played 30 minutes and had four blocks, two assists, and two steals.

The Hardrockers dropped their opening games of the 2020-21 season, falling to No. 13 Colorado Mines, 70-49, on Friday night, and then fell to Regis University, 90-52, Saturday afternoon.

South Dakota Mines is essentially a brand new team this year, losing seven players from last season' s squad that made a first-ever appearance in the RMAC Semifinals. Holes were left either from graduation or from moving on to NCAA Div. I programs. It will take some game experience for this year's squad to gel together and find their identity.

But the 'Rockers are well on their way. The play of Kolten Mortensen was outstanding in the first outing as the junior leads the team averaging 12 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Brevin Walter, who redshirted for the Hardrockers last year, also debuted well and averaged 8.5 markers over the first two games.

Saturday's game is set to tipoff at 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hardrocker Network at: https://portal.stretchinternet.com/sdsmt  .
