RAPID CITY, S.D. – Forward Dalton Walker and junior guard Padiet Wang combined to score 18 points in the final four minutes of action to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team to a 74-73 victory over South Dakota School of Mines night in Rapid City, S.D.
The Mountain Lions trailed the Hardrockers for more than 35 minutes Friday night. Down 11 points with 4:11 left in regulation (67-56), the Mountain Lions mounted their comeback when Wang nailed a three-pointer. UCCS didn't score again for almost two minutes when Walker sank a trey from Isaiah Wilson. After UCCS called a timeout, Wang stole the ball and found Walker for another jumper from downtown.
Walker was fouled on UCCS' next possession which led to two free throws with 62 ticks left in the game. Wang secured an offensive rebound on the Mountain Lions next trip down the court with 17 seconds left, which he followed with a dunk to bring UCCS within two points, 71-73.
Wang found Walker with one second left in the game. Walker drained the thee-pointer as time ran out to give UCCS their fifth straight win.
The Hardrockers came out of the gate strong and led at the half, 37-32. UCCS outscored the home team, 42-36, over the final 20 minutes.
The Hardrockers finished the game shooting 52.6 percent from the field making good on 30-57 attempts, including 7-25 from the three-point line and added 6-10 on free throws. They came down with 33 rebounds, collected 10 assists, seven steals and blocked three shots.
The Mountain Lions closed out the night making good on 27-58 shots, including 10-25 from downtown ad 10-17 from the foul line. UCCS came down with 34 rebounds, had 14 assists and seven steals.
Mitchell Sueker led the Hardrockers with 25 points, five rebounds, one assists, two blocked shots and one steal.
Jacob Anastasi tacked on 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Wilfred Dickson contributed with 12 markers while
Logan Elers and
Troy Brady both cashed in for nine points each.
