RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team ran into a very scrappy and determined Adams State opponent, but was able to put together an impressive run down-the-stretch and completed an exciting comeback rally to earn a 72-69 victory during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Saturday night at the King Center in Rapid City, South Dakota.
SD Mines trailed by as much as 14 points in the first half before cutting the lead down to seven at the intermission, 38-31, and then fell behind by 14 again early in the second half. With 6:05 remaining in the game,
Jack Fiddler hit a three-pointer which pulled the home team to within one point, 60-59.
An 8-0 run over the next two minutes lifted Adams State to give them a 67-59 advantage.
Wilfred Dickson hit back-to-back three pointers as the Hardrocker once again erased the deficit and trailed by just two with 2:49 remaining in the game. Two free throws from
Logan Elers tied the game at 67 all with two minutes remaining.
Adams State took the lead with 1:36 on a jumper from Juwan Green which was followed by a
Troy Brady three-pointer at the other end and SD Mines regained the lead, 70-69.
The Grizzlie had one final opportunity to retake the lead but Green missed two free throws with four second remaining. Fiddler was fouled and made good on both attempts at the other end, 72-69, and a desperation three-pointer was off the mark for ASU as time expired.
The 'Rockers closed out the game shooting 51.9 percent from the field, making good on 27-52 attempts. The hit 11-21 from the three-point line and were 7-9 on free throws. The added 38 rebounds, had 19 assists, three steals and one blocked shot.
Adams State made good on 28-57 attempts, including 6-20 from downtown, was 7-13 from the charity stripe, had 21 rebounds, eight assists, 13 steals and four blocked shots.
Fiddler paced the 'Rockers with 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Allec Williams contributed with 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and one steal; while Elers finished with 11 points, four rebounds, two assist, one steal and one blocked shot.
Saturday's win was not only the first RMAC victory of the season for SD Mines, but also marked the first win over Adams State in Hardrocker program history.
