SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team scored 20 points in the third quarter and held a late fourth quarter lead, but couldn't hold off Black Hills State down the stretch as the Yellow Jackets earned a 55-47 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win Tuesday night at the Young Center in Spearfish, South Dakota.
It was the RMAC opener for both teams where points were had to come by. It never got out of control one way or the other. BHSU ran out to a 9-0 start only to have SD Mines power back and trailed by two after the first quarter, 11-8, and then had a 22-17 edge at the half.
The 'Rockers held BHSU to 12 points in the third quarter and headed into the fourth period up, 37-34. Midway through the fourth quarter the visitors had their biggest lead of the game, 42-34, with 6:57 to play.
BHSU rallied back, chipping away and knotted the game 44-44 with 2:07 remaining and went on a 10-3 run down the stretch to win the game.
SD Mines made good on 18-52 from the field, including 6-21 from three-point range and had just 5-6 from the free throw line. The 'Rockers grabbed 41 rebounds, collected 14 assists, four steals and three blocked shots.
BHSU shot 31 percent from the field making good on 18-58 attempts, including 5-2 from three-point range. They tacked on 14-18 from the foul line, came down with 33 rebounds, had 0 assists and five steals.
Individually,
Anna Haugen recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 18 rebounds. She added two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
Ryan Weiss led the team in scoring with 14 points and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Naomi Hidalgo put up seven points while
Melissa Johnstone and
Molly McCabe both contributed with four points.
Sami Steffeck earned one three-pointer Tuesday and now need just nine more to break the SD Mines all-time record for three-pointers.
