SD Mines Tops Vikings, 76-71, During East-West Challenge

SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team earned a big win Saturday night defeating the Augustana University Vikings, 76-71, during the second night of the East vs. West Challenge in Spearfish, South Dakota.

The score was tied nine times and there were 12 different lead changes throughout the night. SD Mines held the advantage for a majority of the night and had to hold off a Vikings surge down the stretch to earn their second win on the season as the Hardrockers are now 2-2.

The Vikings led for just under three minutes of the game and held the lead just twice in the second half. Augie took a 58-57 lead with 9:38 remaining in the game. However, on the ensuing South Dakota Mines possession, Troy Brady sank a 3-point basket to give the Hardrockers the lead back.

 After South Dakota Mines built a 68-62 lead, the Vikings utilized a 9-2 run to take a 71-70 edge. However, SD Mines again answered back with a long-range shot from Brady for a 73-71 lead with 1:08 on the clock. He was fouled and completed the four-point play to go up 74-71.

The Vikings were unable to get another basket on the scoreboard, falling 76-71.

The Vikings shot 44.1 percent from the field on 26-of-59 shot attempts but were just 26.9 percent from 3-point range. The Hardrockers shot 50 percent from the field on 27-of-54 shot attempts.

Allec Williams paced the 'Rockers with 21 points, four rebounds, seven assists and a steal. He was 5-8 from behind the arc. Brady was 4-7 from downtown and finished with 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal. Logan Elers contributed with nine points and Mitchell Sueker and Wilfred Dickson each posted eight points in the winning effort.

Saturday marked the first win over Augustana in the NCAA Div. II era and just the seventh overall (7-13).
