'Rockers Fall To BHSU In Season Finale

The South Dakota School of Mines volleyball team fell to Black Hills State Friday night in their final match of the 2019 campaign.

The Hardrockers fell in 4 sets, 25-21, 18-25, 21-25, 19-25.

The Yellow Jackets tallied 53 kills on the night in comparison to the 'Rockers 48. BHSU was led offensively by Madison Hoopman and Sierra Ward who posted 13 and 10 kills.

Dana Thomson posted her 13th double double of the season as she tallied 12 kills and 20 digs. Caryn Hazard finished the match with 10 kills and Dejah Behrend chipped in 7 kills along with 7 blocks. Anna Thomas led all players with 26 digs.

The SD Mines volleyball team closes their 2019 campaign with an overall record of 11-16 and an RMAC record of 7-11. The team finished 10th overall in the RMAC standings. This year's squad topped the programs overall win total in the Division 2 era with 11 wins, and they posted 6 more RMAC wins than any other season in history. It was a season of many firsts including the program's first ever wins over Colorado School of Mines and MSU Denver.

Outside hitter Dana Thomson led the Hardrockers offensively with 459 kills on the season which was the 4th highest season total in Hardrocker history.  Caryn Hazard and Jacey Koethe finished with 219 and 194 kills, respectfully.  Setter Shyann Bastain tallied a team high 719 assists throughout the season. Freshman libero Anna Thomas finished with a team high 576 digs, a season total which is the 5th highest total in SD Mines volleyball history. Thomas also led the 'Rockers in aces with 31. On top of Koethe's 194 kills, she led the team in blocks with 102 on the season.

Seniors Allie Brown, Hannah Stevenson, and Caryn Hazard will be dearly missed. Brown, a defensive specialist, finishes her career with 507 digs and 37 aces. Stevenson, a middle blocker/ right side hitter, totaled 315 kills in her career along with 184 blocks. Hazard, an outside hitter, finishes her career with a total of 586 kills, 93 blocks and 406 digs. The trio certainly left their mark on SD Mines volleyball and blazed the path for the future of the program through their selfless dedication over the past four seasons.
