Grizzlies Hold Off Hardrockers Down The Stretch

ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines football team nearly pulled off a miraculous drive Saturday afternoon during a Rock Mountain Athletic Conference matchup against Adams State in Alamosa, Colorado, but came up just short down the stretch as the Grizzlies held on to win their homecoming game, 37-32.

Starting from their own half yard line, the Hardrockers were able to penetrate into Adams State side of the field, traveling down to the 32-yard line before time expired on the visitors. A roughing the passer penalty gave SD Mines one last opportunity to win the game, but a pass into the end zone was off the mark.

SD Mines got off to a great start, scoring on their opening drive capping off three-play 29-yard drive with an Ahmad Lewis rushing touchdown. An Enis Sefa extra point gave SD Mines a 7-0 advantage.

The Grizzlies answered back with 14 unanswered points, before, SD Mines tied the game at the 5:15 mark after a Zach Hoopman three-yard rushing touchdown, after an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Sefa added the PAT to tie the game and then a short time later added a 31-yard field goal to give the 'Rockers a 27-14 edge with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Mesa added another TD to open the second quarter, but Sefa kept the 'Rockers within one point after connecting on a 35-yard field goal.

The Hardrockers would retake the lead toward the end of the first half after Lewis scored his second TD of the day from two yards out. SD Mines made it 26-21 with 3:42 left until halftime. Adams State cut the deficit to two on a field goal at the halftime buzzer, 26-24.

Points were a little bit harder to come by in the second half, but the home team found cracks in the strong Hardrocker defensive effort. ASU notched two field goals in the third quarter, and added another touchdown to open the final frame followed by another field goal to take an 11-point edge with 8:26 remaining in the game.

SD Mines offense came back to life after that and used a six-play, 81-yard drive which was successful when QB Thomas Creese hooked up Anthony Ulrich from 18 yards out to pull back to within four points, 37-32.

After a good defensive stand the 'Rockers set up the dramatic finish.
