RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines football team has Saturday's date circled on the calendar as the Hardrockers get set to take on Black Hills State at Lyle Hare Stadium in Spearfish, South Dakota, for the 134
th meeting of the Black Hills Brawl: The Battle For The Homestake Trophy in a 6 p.m. kickoff.
The rivalry is the longest running series in NCAA Div. II with the Hardrockers holding a slight edge in the series: 63-59-11. Last year the Hardrockers hung a 62-14 loss on the Yellow Jackets.
The Hardrockers are 1-4 in this season after a tough loss to, then ranked, No. 18 CSU-Pueblo, 21-13. In the game against the Thunderwolves, SDM led, 13-7, before CSUP scored 14 unanswered to secure the victory.
Toby Smith threw for 101 yards, while
Ahmad Lewis rushed for 106 yards.
Steven Nolasco led the Hardrockers with 10 tackles and also had a 20-yard pick-six.
Last week, BHSU suffered a 52-22 loss to Dixie State University. Chance Eben threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns, which were caught by Isaac Jefferson and Jordan Pace. Kielar Harpham had 89 receiving yards and 165 all-purpose yards. Josh Gurnaby and Hunter Stephens led the Yellow Jackets with eight tackles each.
The Hardrocker defense currently leads the nation in defensive touchdowns, tally six on the season so far.
Dominick Jackson and Nolasco both have two defensive touchdowns this season, while Marwin Awapati and
Will Carroll both scored one touchdown.
Offensively, running back
Ahmad Lewis is ranked second in the RMAC with 450 yards on 121 carries. He is averaging 90 yards a game and has two rushing TD's so far this season.
On special teams,
Enis Sefa leads the Hardrockers in scoring with 29 total points. He is 7-11 on field goals this season, which puts him second in the conference and has tallied 8-9 on extra points.
