UCCS Escapes With RMAC Win Over 'Rockers In Defensive Battle

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- It was a defensive battle Saturday night as the South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team squared off against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

UCCS kept just out of arms reach of the Hardrockers, hit all their free throws down the stretch and escaped with a 57-45 victory.

Points were hard to come by for both teams but the Hardrockers led after the first quarter, 10-9. The Mountain Lions were able to break through SD Mines' zone defense in the second quarter and put up 23 markers while the 'Rockers cashed in for 17. UCCS led at the half, 32-28.

UCCS extened their lead to open the third quarter and opened up a 10-point edge with 8:20 to go in the third period, but the Hardrockers battled back and erased the deficit and trailed by just one point, 37-36 with 3:46 to go in the quarter. The Mountain Lions regrouped and closed out the quarter up by seven markers, 45-38.

The Hardrockers had some opportunities to close the gap in the fourth quarter, got some good looks at the basket, but couldn't get the ball to fall through the hoop. UCCS was able to maintain their edge thanks to some clutch free throws down the stretch.

Defense was key for the 'Rockers Saturday as they caused UCCS to turn the ball over 19 times and notched 13 steals. SD Mines shot 31.6 percent from the field, making good on 18-57 attempts, including 4-19 from behind the arch. They converted 5-9 from the free throw line, grabbed 32 rebounds, had 13 assists and one block.

The Mountain Lions also shot 31.6 from the field and put up an identical 18-57 attempts. They hit 8-22 from the three point line and were a perfect 13-13 from the foul line. They tallied 47 rebounds, had 16 assits, nine steals and six blocks.

The 'Rockers were led by Taylor Molstad with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sami Steffek also contributed with 11 markers, had four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Molly McCabe and Jessica Lohrenz both cashed in for seven points each.
