Orediggers Break Away In 2nd Half, Defeat Hardrocker Men In RMAC Matchup

RAPID CITY, S.D. - A second-half outburst by Colorado School of Mines gave the Orediggers a 73-52 win over the South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the King Center in Rapid City, S.D.

The Orediggers (18-6, 12-6 RMAC) earned one of eight RMAC Tournament spots with four games left to play as they outscored the Hardrockers (7-17, 4-15 RMAC) by a 41-21 margin in the second half with 61.5 percent shooting in the period. The first half of play was tightly contested with Colorado School of Mines earning a slight one-point edge at the half, 32-31.

The second half would be all Orediggers, however, as Adam Laine converted an early three-point play to spark a 12-0 run that included eight points from Glen. That turned it into a 48-35 lead at the 13:11 mark, and after the Hardrockers pared the deficit back to eight on sophomore Logan Elers' layup at the 11:16 mark, Mines slowly built the lead back up and won by its largest margin, 21 points, as Oredigger Mason Baker hit the final basket of the game in the last minute.

The Hardrockers finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field making good on 20-50 attempts. The home team was 6-15 from three-point range and were 6-8 from the free throw line. SD Mines collected 12 assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

Colorado School of Mines converted 29-56 to shoot 51.8 percent from the field. They were 4-13 from the free throw line and hit 11-16 on free throws. The Orediggers grabbed 30 rebounds, hand nine assists, eight steals and four blocked shots.

The Hardrockers were paced by sophomore Jake Heath with 12 points (all coming behind the arch). Elers also contributed with 12 points while sophomore Jack Fiddler tacked on 11 points.

Four Orediggers scored in double figures led by Michael Glen's 18-point, nine-rebound effort and 14 points each from Ben Sonnefeld and Adam Laine, with Luke Schroepfer scoring 12.

The Hardrockers last home game will be Friday night when they play host Western State Colorado University in a 7:30 p.m. RMAC matchup.
