Seawolves Defeat SD Mines Men, 75-55

ANCHORAGE – Tyler Brimhall had 26 points to lead a three-point display and fellow junior Sjur Berg tallied career highs of 14 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks Friday to power Alaska Anchorage to a 75-55 men's basketball victory over South Dakota Mines at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (4-3) also got 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from junior forward Niko Bevens as they shot 59 percent from three-range and out-rebounded the visitors from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, 34-23.

The Hardrockers (2-4) were led by 16 points, seven assists and four steals from point guard Allec Williams but were outshot .519 to .412 overall. Mitch Sueker added 12 points for the visiting 'Rockers and and Troy Brady hit 3-4 from behind the and tallied 10 points.

"That was a great team win tonight," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "They (Mines) did some things to get us out of rhythm and made a little run that had me concerned early in the second half, but we responded well. I thought we moved the ball well and did a great job on the glass. I'm really happy for Sjur, especially, because it's been a long road back after his injury and taking a year off."

Berg shot 5 of 8 from the field and made all four of his free throws to collect the first double-double of his career. After breaking his elbow in 2015-16, playing 8.1 minutes per game as a reserve in 2016-17 and spending the 2017-18 back home in Nesoddtangen, Norway, the 6-7 forward finally topped his previous career highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds from his freshman season of 2014-15.

Despite trailing 30-13 midway through the first half, the Hardrockers would not go away easily, slicing their deficit to 47-43 at the 17:02 mark of the second half. Nearly four minutes passed before the game's next basket, when Brimhall hit the first of back-to-back treys to stretch the advantage back to double digits. Brimhall then fed Berg for an easy layup to cap an 8-0 run, and the Seawolves led by at least 10 the rest of the way.

A 6-5 wing from Logan, Utah, Brimhall swished 6 of 7 three-pointers and shot 10 of 16 overall, along with nine rebounds, three assists and just one turnover in 35 minutes. Meanwhile, Bevens was 3 of 6 from long range as the Seawolves connected on 13 of 22 from deep.

UAA finished with 23 assists on its 27 baskets, including six assists from starting point guard Brennan Rymer. The Seawolves also got a lift off the bench from sophomore guard Keenan Dowell, who had three points, four rebounds, three assists and a block.

The Seawolves and Hardrockers meet for a rematch Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center.
