GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team notched its first win of the 2017 season Sunday afternoon with an impressive 2-0 shutout against Lubbock Christian University during the final day of the Colorado Mesa Soccer Tournament in Grand Junction, Colo., in non-conference action.
The victory comes two days after a 0-0 tie against a talented Newman University (Kan.) team, Â giving the Hardrockers the best start it the program's history with a 1-0-1 overall record heading into their home opener this weekend against the University of Mary.
"After the game on Friday we talked about taking some more chances, especially in the attacking half," said Hardrocker head coach
Andrew Conniff. "(Sunday) we were more active offensively and because of that, wore their defense down."

Both goals came in the second half Sunday.

The 'Rockers first score  was credited to freshman
Trenton Magryta, scoring an unassisted goal outside the box during the 58
th minute. The second goal came during the 68 minute by senior
Charles Kieffer when he took a cross from freshman
Julian Bouchard and found the back of the net from the middle of the box.

"I am so exciting to get that first win and the goals from Trenton and Charles were impressive," Conniff said in his first year as head coach of SD Mines. "Right now everyone is working hard and playing for each other. The thing I'm most encouraged about is that I see so many areas where we can still improve and the guys are eager to get to that next level."

The Hardrockers tallied 10 shots in the game, two on goal while Lubbock notched 18 shots.

The Hardrockers will kick off their home opener Friday night against the Marauder at Sioux Park in Rapid City, S.D. , starting at 6 p.m.
