RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team suffered a costly scoring drought midway through the second half of play Tuesday night which allowed the University of Mary to gain a slight advantage down the stretch and tipped the scales as the Marauders defeated the Hardrockers, 91-82, in a non-conference bout at the King Center in Rapid City.
The visitors were hot from the perimeter in the first half, shooting 62 percent converting 18-29 shots, but SD Mines was persistent. Mary would go on a run, but the 'Rockers were able to real their former DAC-10 foes back in.
The Marauders held a one-point edge at the half, 43-42. Mary was able to string together a few key shots midway through the second period. The Hardrockers couldn't convert shots down the stretch, allowing Mary to gain enough of a lead to turn the home team away. The Marauders outscored SD Mines, 49-39 over the final 20 minutes.
Free throws were another factor in Tuesday's outcome. SD Mines hit 18-29 from the foul line (62 percent) while Mary shot 77 percent, converting 24-31.
SD Mines finished the night shooting 41 percent from the field, making good on 26-63, including an 11-26 performance from behind the arc. They also came down with 38 rebounds, 13 were offensive boards. The home team had 17 assists, four steals and two blocks.
The Marauders shot 54 percent from the field, hitting 28-52 attempts and collected 31 rebounds (just three offensive boards). The visitors had 16 assists, six steals and one block.
The Hardrockers had six individuals in double figures. Freshman Wilfred Dickson led the way with 19 points, six rebounds and one assist. Sophomore Jake Heath had 12 points (four three-point goals), five assists, five rebounds and one steal. Freshman Troy Brady added 11 markers and junior Jacob Anastasi, sophomore Logan Elers and senior Brian Orr all contributed with 10 points.
The loss drops SD Mines to 2-2 on the season and will next start RMAC play Dec. 1 when the Hardrockers play host to MSU Denver in a 7:30 p.m. game at the King Center.
