RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines men's soccer team closed out its final home game of the 2017 season in dramatic fashion, winning the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match in overtime, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sioux Park Stadium in Rapid City, S.D.
It was the first overtime-win in program history for the 'Rockers and the first win over Adams State as well as the best single season conference won-loss record for the SD Mines squad.
With a strong cross wind rolling across the pitch, it made things a little difficult for the team that had to play into it. The Hardrockers had the breeze at their backs in the first half and had to fight it in the second period and then had the breeze behind them in OT. Coincidentally, all three goals were scored going with the wind.
The Hardrockers drew first blood during the 39
th minute when senior
Brandon Lind booted a ball into the back of the net on an unassisted play.
The Grizzlies knotted the game, 1-1 in the second period at the 57:07 mark when Leo Barba got a goal off an assist from Mario Castro.
The game was decided at the 95:51 mark when sophomore
Justin Barkow collected his ninth goal of the year (a single-season record) making good on a score from about 30 yards out from the goal off an assist from senior
Darin James.
Barkow paced the Hardrocker offense with four shots, two on goal; freshman
Trenton Magryta had three shots, two on goal and Lind finished with two shots, one on goal.
As a team SD Mines had 12 shots in the game, five were on goal while the Grizzlies finished with 13 shots, nine on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jack Seiffer played all 95:51 minutes in goal, where he picked up the win, getting eight saves on 13 shots faced.
The win breaks a nine-game skid as the Hardrockers improve to 4-10-2 on the season and 3-11 in the RMAC. Â SD Mines closes out the season Saturday traveling to Billings, Montana to challenge the MSU Billings Yellowjackets,
