SALT LAKE CITY, Utah --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team rallied back from the brink Friday night to earn its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season over Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Facing a 14-10 deficit in the fifth and final set, the Hardrockers rattled off six-straight points to give them the 3-2 win. After falling, 25-15, in the first game, SD Mines rebounded well to earn the victory in the second frame, 25-23. The third set went to the Griffins as they bounced back for a 25-21 win. The Lady 'Rockers responded well in the fourth set and earned a hard-fought win, 25-22, to set up the dramatic finish.
SD Mines finished the match with 58 kills and had a .193 hitting percentage. The visitors tallied 55 assists, had five service aces, 85 digs and 17 total blocks. The Griffins came away with 65 kills and had a .170 hitting percentage. They tacked on 60 assits, 10 service aces, 77 digs and had five total blocks.
Individually,
Mikkella Reese paced the 'Rockers with 20 kills and had a .213 hitting percentage and had a team high 22 digs. Junior
Anna Breidt contributed with 16 kills and had a .419 hitting percentage and was credited with one solo block and six assisted blocks. Senior
Emily Newton added 12 kills and 19 digs. Freshman
Emma Eckel came up with 51 assists and junior
Alye Wagner recorded 20 digs on the night.
SD Mines improves its record to 3-17 on the season and 1-9 in RMAC play. Next up, the Hardrocker travel to Gunnison, Colo., on Friday to face Western State University and then are on to Grand Junction, Colo., next Saturday to challenge Colorado Mesa.
