SD Mines Netter Fall To Angelo State To Open Season

SAN ANGELO, Texas --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's volleyball team put up of good fight to start the 2016 season against a powerful Angelo State team during a tournament in San Angelo, Texas, but despite a good effort, fell to the host school, 3-0.

Angelo State defeated the Lady Hardrockers, 25-14, 25-19, 25-20.

"Not a bad start for us despite the outcome. They were a pretty stiff challenge to start the season but we competed well for the majority of the match," said Hardrocker volleyball head coach Doug Tabbert.  "We had a number of athletes playing the first match of their collegiate career, so the nerves seemed to have an impact at times."

SD Mines finished its first match of the season with 28 kills and went 82-96 on the attack with 28 assists and came up with 41 digs and seven blocks in the match. Angelo State ended with 99-107 on the attack with 48 kills on 45 assists and had 51 digs and 10 total blocks.

Freshman Caryn Hazard led the offensive charge for the Hardrockers going 20-21 on the attack with 10 kills while junior Emily Newton had six kills and went 15-17 on the attack. Sophomore Emily Jensen tallied 18 assists and sophomore Justine Langus led the way with 14 digs.

"Plenty to feel good about, we just need to grow up quickly and get comfortable," Tabbert said. "Great effort by Emily Newton. She played a solid match."
