Slow Starts Sinks Hardrockers Vs. Colorado Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. --- A slow start Saturday did in the South Dakota School of Mines men's basketball team  during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game against the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., as the Orediggers defeated the Hardrockers, 92-64.

The Orediggers (11-3, 6-2 RMAC) held the Hardrockers without a field goal for the first 5 minutes and 7 seconds of the game, building a 15-point lead in the meantime that never dipped into single digits for the remainder of the game.

The Orediggers came out of the gate on a 12-0 run. Colorado Mines led at the half, 42-26, and then outscored the visitors, 50-38, over the final 20 minutes.

SD Mines struggled on the offense end in the early goings and ended the game shooting 35 percent from the field, converting 20-57, including eight three-pointers, and was 16-25 from the free throw line. The Hardrockers tacked on 27 rebounds and eight assists.

Colorado Mines dished in 32-60 attempts and was 53 percent from the field, including six three-point goals, and was 22-28 from the foul line to go along with 47 rebounds, 17 assists, two steals and one block.

Individually for the Hardrockers, senior Jamall Taylor paced his squad with 16 points and three rebounds. Junior Brian Orr contributed with 12 points, three rebounds and an assists, while senior Troy Whiteto added seven markers, two rebounds and one assist. 

SD Mines senior Konor Kulas, the RMAC leading scorer, caught a case of the flu during the weekend road trip and didn't play very much Saturday afternoon. He finished with just two points and one rebound.

Colorado Mines was led by Luke Schroepfer with 24 points, Gokul Natesan added 16 and Adam Laine put up 17 markers.

The loss dropped SD Mines to 8-6 on the season and 4-4 in the RMAC. The Hardrockers will be back home this coming weekend taking on Colorado State – Pueblo Friday followed by a rematch with New Mexico Highlands Saturday evening.
