RAPID CITY, S.D. --- The South Dakota School of Mines women's basketball team put up a good fight during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon against the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, but some missed opportunities late in the game allowed the visitors to steal the win in overtime, 64-61, at Goodell Gymnasium in Rapid City, S.D.
The Hardrockers forced overtime when senior
Heather Rogers converted a layup at the end of regulation to knot the game at 55-55. In overtime, SD Mines had a couple of looks at the basket to gain the advantage but couldn't convert. Down the stretch, Colorado Mines got a slim edge and held on to nab the win.
"They picked up a couple of crucial offensive rebounds down the stretch in the fourth quarter and overtime that cost us dearly. And then we caused a couple of turnovers in overtime that we didn't capitalize on," said Hardrocker women's basketball head coach
Ryan Larsen. "Besides that, our kids showed a ton of character and guts to get that game to overtime. We played from behind most of the game and came up with some huge plays and key stops. I couldn't be happier with the effort that we had."
Colorado Mines jumped out to a 17-9 lead after the first quarter, but SD Mines outscored the Orediggers, 14-8 in the second period and trailed by just two points at the half, 25-23. SD Mines dished in 15 points in the third quarter while the 'Diggers posted 14 points. SD Mines trailed by just one, 39-38. The 'Rockers outscored the visitors, 17-16, in the fourth quarter. Colorado Mines had nine points in overtime while the Hardrockers managed six.
"We did not have our 'A' game tonight. When you face a good team like that you have to show your best," Larsen added. "But we'll get things fixed, work on the turnovers and rebounds, and regroup for next weekend."
The Hardrockers finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field hitting 22-61 attempts, including nine three-pointers and was 8-11 from the free throw line. The Hardrockers grabbed 25 rebounds, had 20 assists, nine steals and three blocks.
The Orediggers made good on 27-64 shots for 42 percent, including five three-pointers and was 5-9 from the foul line. Colorado Mines recorded 41 rebounds, had 15 assists, two steals and four blocks.
