ACCOMPLISHMENTS
  • Kaleb Birney was hired by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in conjunction with Monument Health as the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine on May 12, 2021.
  • Birney helps maintains a significant partnership with Rapid City Monument Health, which has improved the quality of physical care and scholar-athlete experience.
  • Oversees the physical and mental care for all 13 of the South Dakota Mines varsity sports programs.
  • Experienced in various levels, working with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Derby Twins, and Brookhaven Bucks in addition to his collegiate experience.
  • Awards: Frontier Conference Athletic Trainer of the Year (2020), NATA Young Professional National Distinction Award (2019)
  • Current Committees: NATA Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine - Division 2; South Dakota Athletic Trainer Advisory Council
  • He has covered the final four for NCAA Division I, Division II, and Division III men’s basketball.
  • While at the University of Montana Western from 2014-2021, Birney was apart of 4 Men’s Basketball NAIA National Tournament teams.
  • In 2020, Birney received the New Horizons Award, honoring him for contributions to the Northwest Athletic Trainers Association (NWATA) and the athletic training profession as an individual with less than 12 years of certification.
  • Previously, Birney served as a board member on the Montana Athletic Training Board of Licensure and Public Relations Chair for the Northwest Athletic Trainers Association.
  • After being the Athletic Trainer for the University of Montana Western from 2014-16, he was elevated to head athletic trainer for the remainder of his time there.
  • In 2011, Birney was a part of the Wichita State men’s basketball NIT (National Invitation Tournament) team.
  • Birney also had a stop at Georgia State University.
  • Birney has earned certifications as a Performance Enhancement Specialist (PES), Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES), FirstAid/CPR and Sound Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (SASTM).
  • Birney has earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training (2012) and a master’s degree in Exercise Science & Health Promotion (2014).
