- Bowan Montgomery was hired as the defensive line coach at the South Dakota Mines on Arpil 19, 2018, and added the role of special teams leading into the 2021 season. He is in his sixth season at the institution.
- In 2023, the Hardrockers defense allowed just 104.2 yards per game, the second best mark in the RMAC and 29th in NCAA Division II.
- Connor Taylor become the school’s all-time record holder in career PATs made.
- Following the season, Caleb Franklin and Taylor Hojer earned RMAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors.
- The defensive line was a big part of the defensive success in 2022. The team allowed just 110.5 rushing yards per game (3rd RMAC, 35th NCAA Division II) and sacked the quarterback 3.45 times per game (3rd RMAC, 10th NCAA Division II).
- Caleb Franklin earned RMAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors following the 2022 season.
- In 2021 and 2022, he helped coach defensive lineman Gavin Chaddock and Kyante Christian to First Team All-RMAC honors.
- Both specialists – Connor Taylor (K) and Casey Knutson (P) earned Honorable Mention All-RMAC in 2021.
- Each of Chaddock and Christian recorded 7.5 sacks for top-10 RMAC finished to go along with placing 6th and 7th in tackles for loss. They also finished in 6th and 7th in tackles for loss.
- Christian finished 16th in the RMAC in total tackles with 70.
- Montgomery’s first season as special teams coach resulted in the special teams unit recorded 9 blocks (2nd in the RMAC) with 6 coming on kicks, and three blocked punts.
- Christian Singleton tied for the NCAA lead with 3 blocks.
- Isaiah Eastman was the only freshman in the conference to earn an All-RMAC selection, being named as second team punt returner.
- In 2020, the defensive unit led the RMAC in sacks with 13.
- Thomas Chapman, Defensive end earned Honorable Mention All-RMAC in 2019 after recording 65 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, and 6 sacks.
- Before coming to South Dakota Mines, Montgomery coached for two years at Humboldt State prior to them shutting down their football program, coaching the linebackers in 2017, the defensive line in 2016 and the PAT/FG block team both years.
- In his final year at Humboldt State in 2017, he coached linebacker James Bemnedix to GNAC Second Team Defense selection.
- His first year at Humboldt State, he helped DL Josh Hinson earn honorable mention all-conference honors.
- Prior to moving to Humboldt State, Montgomery spent his first two years of on-field coaching with alma mater, the University of Hawai’i at Manoa from 2014-15.
- In 2015, Montgomery coached Kennedy Tulimasealii to an All-Mountain West First-Team selection.
- The Hawai’i defense allowed 195 rushing yards per game in 2015, 5th best in the MWC.
- Beau Yap earned an Honorable Mention selection as a linebacker in 2014.
- The first two stops for Montgomery were at Hawai’i as a strength and conditioning intern and Boise State as a recruiting specialist.
- Montgomery played at Weber State from 2005-2006, before transferring to Hawaii and finishing his playing career there. He was a part of the historic 2007 Rainbow Warrior
